    I can honestly say there are a number of reasons; however normally the one was HP's philosophy for fostering a host of creativity and advancement, captured in the "12 Rules of the Garage". It is also clear in my opinion that HP has a bright future in cloud computing, and cloud-based technologies. HP has a consumer business that's already cloud-based, with offerings such a Snapfish, Melodeo, MagCloud, BookPrep and ePrint. Plus, there is the many really cool stuff that’s going on with the Palm and webOS that was announced last year.

    No one can argue that HP has a long history of providing great products and innovation and also the cloud will be no exception. This is just the tip of the iceberg—the beginning of an 10-15 year cycle where we are going to see a lot of great new product or service from HP, along with a massive adoption of this cloud.

    HP released its first two public cloud services for beta, and they're based in part on the open-source OpenStack rule. The services, HP Fog up Compute and HP Cloud Object Storage are open for registration and employ is free. The news certainly helps validate that OpenStack project, but it’s too early to know whether HP makes it as a public fog up provider.

    The new services aim to compete directly with other developer-focused cloud services like Amazon Web Services together with Rackspace, which leads this OpenStack project. HP announced its OpenStack membership within July of 2011, but it surely would seem the company may be working with the code long before that time.

    As sexy as being the OpenStack angle is, though — HP may be the first major provider besides Rackspace to publicly use OpenStack code in the availabIe offering — it appears a stretch to call the new cloud services “OpenStack-based.     I'™m excited (and I'm not by myself) that a brand-new Infrastructure-as-a-Service provider can contest with market leader AWS, but if anyone can match AWS on economies associated with scale and overall investment, it's a giant like HP (or maybe Dell). Rackspace has neither HP's revenue nor its software expertise, and IBM's SmartCloud service appears more centered on risk-averse enterprise developers than on mainstream programmers.
